Freudian Slip: 57 States
I remember hearing something about Obama’s gaffe when he stated there were 57 states in America a while back, but I never actually heard the clip. I chalked it up to a slip of the tongue. You know, when you call your children by the wrong name but you quickly correct yourself until you get the right name. Well, I just came across the video clip of the gaffe this morning and found it was more than a slip of the tongue. Watch for yourself…
Then someone pointed out to me that there was the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC). It “is an international organisation with a permanent delegation to the United Nations. It groups 57 member states, from the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia, Caucasus, Balkans, Southeast Asia, South Asia and South America.” [SOURCE]
Now, in all probability he meant 47, since he said there was 1 state left to visit and he wasn’t counting Alaska & Hawaii, but it’s curious how he elongated the word fifty-seven, and yet still didn’t catch himself in saying it wrong.
There is much controversy over whether or not he is truly a Christian or a Muslim in disguise, but there is no doubt he has ties to Muslim-friendly folks. So the idea of getting himself confused with the number of “member states” in the OIC, the second largest intergovernmental organization of its kind (next to the UN), doesn’t seem that far-fetched. Hmmm.
NOTE: Freudian slip: n. A verbal mistake that is thought to reveal an unconscious belief, thought, or emotion.
