America, Obey the Ten Commandments

Ten CommandmentsI was thinking tonight about what’s wrong with our country, and I came to the conclusion that we, as a nation have strayed from God, and we are now (and have been for quite some time) suffering the consequences.

It is my opinion that a lot of things went haywire when we began removing “The Ten Commandments” from the public square. While it’s still etched in stone in various federal buildings across Washington DC, I strongly believe we need to bring this set of Scripture (found in Exodus 20) back into our communities.

First and foremost, we need to know what they are and what they mean. Then, we need to apply them to our lives and our communities.

The Ten Commandments

  1. You shall have no other gods before me.
  2. You shall not make for yourself an idol…you shall not bow down to them or worship them.
  3. You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God.
  4. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
  5. Honor your father and your mother.
  6. You shall not murder.
  7. You shall not commit adultery.
  8. You shall not steal.
  9. You shall not bear false testimony against your neighbor.
  10. You shall not covet.

I am committed to posting these commandments prominently in my home and teaching them to my children. These will be a staple in my family.

If you have not memorized these commandments, I encourage you to commit them to memory. Then teach them to your children, nieces & nephews. Quiz them on it as you would do when they are learning their ABC’s or how to count to 10. They should know them by heart.

Ask your co-workers, neighbors, friends & family members if they can name them. If not, give them a list and offer them a free lunch for committing them to memory. We need to flood our generation as well as the next with this knowledge and we need to live by it.

One last note, when God delivered these commandments on Mount Sinai, “…there was thunder and lightning, with a thick cloud over the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast. Everyone in the camp trembled.” (Ex. 19:16) God had specifically said to Moses to “Assemble the people before me to hear my words so that they may learn to revere me as long as they live in the land and may teach them to their children.” (Deut. 4:10b) and then he delivered these commandments.

Let us revere God and teach His commandments to the next generation.

  1. Comment from Elizabeth:

Great post, but I just wouldn’t stop at the Ten Commandments. I could write a lengthy post regarding what needs to be done to put this country back in order, but my kids will soon be clamoring for me to check their schoolwork and it will have to wait until another day. However, I will say that IGNORANCE is the biggest foe we have. Our children need to be taught the Constitution before it becomes an irrelevant document. Unfortunately, teaching secular, politically correct, revisionist history is what is deemed “right” today. I think I have heard the term “Living Constitution” until I could puke. If that’s the case, why bother having a Constitution at all? Are there some things that needed to be amended? Most definitely-slavery being one of them. However, the Constitution was set to promote the general welfare and provide for the common defense. It’s what makes us Americans. We need to teach our children the foundation of our country. It’s all the rage to misquote our Founding Fathers stating all the ills of religion and to demonize America’s Christian foundations. However, I would advise….no, I CHALLENGE people to read “The Christian Life and Character of the Civil Institutions of the United States” by Benjamin F. Morris. Educate yourself on the different systems of government. We are needy people. However, when needs and wants overrride commonsense, we set the stage for the loss of democracy in this great Republic. Thus in our neediness, we set the stage for a dictatorship.

Oh, believe me I can go on and on with what I think we need to do to get our country back on track. Yes, you are right about the whole ignorance thing. We need to know our history…and not through the lens of the liberal media and public education system. Go back to the source(s), folks, for your information. Read our Constitution. Read the Bible. Read what our founding fathers wrote. Pray to God for guidance.

Thank you, Elizabeth for sharing the above resource, and feel free to share your lengthy thoughts on the subject when you have the time.

  3. Comment from Faith Stuart:

As I meet more people who believe in socialistic ideas, but don’t want to call it that, or don’t think it’s bad. It opens my eyes to the fact that these people who are “thinking wrong” and “not knowing history” are really just blind, in need of the Savior. We need to teach our children as God told us to, but he also said to go unto all the world preaching the gospel, making disciples. The people that don’t think like us, are not the enemy, they are the ones we have to reach out and love. But they consider us their enemy. Christianity that says love your enemies and serve others as unto the Lord is considered a threat because the name of Jesus. Yes, he’s the only way to God, but He loves you as you are. You can hate and hate him but he still loves you. How am I showing that love?

It has been made abundantly clearer to me that our country was started on the foundations of religion and morality. (I will expand on this in future posts.) And every effort has been made to remove God ever since.

Our country has become what it is because Christians have allowed secularism in, period. We disobeyed the first commandment and allowed other gods in God’s place.

We allowed ungodly men and women to lead in all levels of government and to teach our youth. We fell asleep at the wheel.

We can blame it on the “world” or we can take ownership of the problem and work to correct it.

We, as a nation need to turn our hearts back to God, and it is the Christians’ responsibility to lead the way.

    1. We must Remember our Past…that means we need to LEARN the truth about our history as a nation. It was God who gave us this country. We were a blessed nation because we built our nation on God’s principles.
    2. We must Repent…confess our transgressions to God, cease sinning against Him, and resolve to live according to His law.
    3. We must Return to God…change our laws to reflect God’s law, bring religion and morality back into our public education and live according to His law.
