SUBJECT: Know Your Neighbors

In an attempt to familiarize myself with my most local neighbors, I took the following steps:

  1. I mapped out a radius around my house of all the residents within closest proximity to me.
    • Using a tax map tool online, I identified all the house numbers in my neighborhood and generated a personal list of neighbors for each street, in house number order, noting the owner's names for each household.
    • I printed out the map showing each of the parcels of land & their house numbers (so I can get a visual idea as to who lived where).
    • I acquired envelopes & postage stamps.
  2. I began to systematically reach out to everybody in the neighborhood.
    • I reacquainted myself with those I already knew through phone calls & in-person greetings.
    • For those I had not met yet, I mailed letters to their physical addresses introducing myself to them, expressing my core values & a desire for community based on geography, and I invited those who were interested to get back in touch with me.
    • I noted all those who replied on my list and followed up with a reply -- either with a phone conversation, personal visit or letter/card.
  3. I continued to coordinate private get-togethers on an individual basis with those willing to do so going forward.

In becoming more familiar with those around me, both locally and in the surrounding vicinity, I have found those who refuse to continue the present course within the System.

While I care about all of my neighbors, I have chosen to invest more of my time & energy into fostering these relationships now, while maintaining loose contact with the rest.

These are the people who are journeying through the wilderness to a better way of life on the land. And it is out of these people that a new (& hopefully better) society will begin to form in which I want my children to operate.

See more of what I'm doing to build a personal community.
